Jump to Test Genie Product Page

Cerritos, CA, November 16, 2010 – Corelis, Inc., a leading supplier of high-performance boundary-scan test and measurement tools, announced today the launch of TestGenie, a new low-cost, low-risk boundary-scan test solution targeted specifically to companies with restricted resources, limited JTAG experience, fixed schedules, and tight test budgets. TestGenie is designed to satisfy a real need for boundary-scan testing, while at the same time reducing the inherent risks involved with boundary-scan employment. This service-oriented product, based on Corelis’ ScanExpress software family, provides customers with a complete boundary-scan test procedure along with a production-ready execution station, all for one low price.

“With capital equipment budgets being harder to come by and fewer resources available for managers to assign, it is evident that the traditional model of owning boundary-scan tools outright and having a resident expert to develop test procedures is not practical for a large number of companies,” describes Ryan Jones, Senior Technical Marketing Engineer at Corelis. “But JTAG test requirements don’t go away just because of these barriers. Many companies are finding themselves sacrificing their schedules to get the test coverage they need or more frightfully sacrificing test coverage to stay on schedule. TestGenie is designed to provide these companies with an affordable boundary-scan solution without sacrificing schedule or test coverage.”

TestGenie is an ideal product for companies that:

  • Have a limited test budget

  • Are uncertain if the tool costs will ever be recovered

  • Do not have the resources to allocate to learn boundary-scan or write test procedures

  • Have a limited number of design projects utilizing boundary-scan devices

  • Have limited JTAG experience

  • Are not able to pursue boundary-scan due to tight product schedules

  • Are overwhelmed by the technical requirements for boundary-scan

  • Are unwilling to take the risk of failing with boundary-scan

Jones continues, “Low-cost boundary-scan tools are nothing new, but they require the user to do all the work. TestGenie completely removes that overhead. It relieves companies of the risk of test procedure development and allows them to assign a variable cost to a specific design project or contract.”

The TestGenie system includes:

  • Board Specific Perpetual Licenses for:
    - ScanExpress Runner
    - ScanExpress ADO
    - ScanExpress Viewer

  • USB JTAG controller

  • 12 month hardware and software support contract

  • Test procedure development for one Unit Under Test (UUT)

“Corelis is committed to product reliability and this singular characteristic is the cornerstone of our business model as well as that of our customers and the industry at large,” emphasizes George B. La Fever, CEO and President at Corelis. “Product reliability is achieved through testing to the maximum coverage levels practicable. TestGenie has been strategically designed to ease that practicability for those companies who have a very real JTAG testing requirement. Test procedure development is delivered on a guaranteed schedule, allowing customers to clearly scope and bound their testing challenges in terms of schedule, cost, and technical risk in a technology where quite often more is unknown than known.”

Runner-Lite is designed to provide engineers visibility, awareness, and accessibility to board level JTAG and functional testing. The Runner-Lite test executive applies boundary-scan test patterns to a reference board, reads back the responses, and provides comprehensive fault detection and isolation of boundary-scan chain infrastructure, board interconnect, pull-up/pull-down resistors, and clusters such as memories and UARTs. The tool also performs automated and interactive functional tests on peripheral components connected to the on-board processor as well as In-System-Programming (ISP) of CPLDs, Flash memories, and serial EEPROM devices.

The software includes a powerful graphical fault identification subsystem to isolate and visualize the location of PCB faults. The subsystem displays a CAD-based photographic representation of a reference design on the host PC display to facilitate the rapid discovery of the actual location for any failure, even when the fault is hidden underneath devices. This feature grants engineers the ability to visually locate the fault diagnostic area using the virtual PCB representation.

Indyme Retail Solutions Benefits from Corelis Advanced Diagnostics

Corelis Boundary-Scan Tools Pinpoint Hard-to-Find Manufacturing Defects.

Jump to Success Story

Cerritos, CA, August 23, 2010 – Corelis, Inc., a leading supplier of high-performance boundary-scan test and measurement tools, announced today the successful implementation and application of the ScanExpress ADO advanced diagnostics system at the test facilities of Indyme, the leading developer of retail event-triggering communication technologies. The advanced diagnostics module adds precise structural fault identification to Indyme’s existing Corelis boundary-scan test system.

As a long time client with Corelis, Indyme has utilized the ScanExpress Runner GANG concurrent boundary-scan test system for high volume production testing and programming. After experiencing unexpected and difficult-to-identify failures in a recent production run on their Connect Start™ platform, Indyme opted to add the Corelis ScanExpress ADO module to assist in identifying the root cause of the encountered failures.

Indyme’s Connect Start™ platform is a versatile event response system used by retailers to conveniently manage and process alarm triggers. The platform is built on highly reliable electronic hardware capable of accepting up to 1,000 alarm input triggers, all in a compact form factor for convenient utility room installation.

"We had been primarily using Corelis tools for high volume go/no-go decisions as well as chip programming," stated Bob Wendt, Indyme’s Manufacturing Engineering Manager. "However, this set of circumstances required a tool that could help identify the root cause of our problem. Luckily, Corelis already had a software module with this capability." ScanExpress ADO led debug efforts to the root of the production failure, enabling Indyme to quickly take corrective action and greatly improving manufacturing yield with minimal resource commitment.

Wendt concluded, "With just this one fault identification, the Corelis boundary-scan tools provided a return on our investment far beyond expectations. If you have BGA parts in your product, boundary-scan is a requirement. It isn’t really an option if you’re serious about testing."

Corelis Releases Low Voltage JTAG Adapter for Intel Processors

New Adapter Supports Intel XDP, XDP-Sinned, and ITP700Flex Connectors.

Cerritos, CA, August 4, 2010 – Corelis, Inc., the leading supplier of high-performance boundary-scan test and measurement tools, has announced the availability of a new active Low Voltage Adapter for compatibility between Corelis’ boundary-scan controllers and low voltage JTAG designs operating below 2.5V. The Low Voltage Adapter is rated to support up to 100 MHz TCK speeds, employs ESD protection, and is capable of driving up to 90mA on its outputs.

The Low Voltage Adapter provides an electrical and mechanical interface to connect any Corelis 20-pin boundary-scan controller to a high density Intel XDP (eXtended Debug Port) connector. XDP is a 60-pin, small form factor connector designed to extend JTAG by permitting two separate clock domain scan-chains to be implemented. Dividing the system scan-chains into two domains allows increased operating frequencies of the processor scan-chain by moving slower chipset JTAG agents to a completely separate clock domain.

The XDP port runs at roughly 1.0V and has 51 ohm signal termination resistors, preventing traditional TTL-based JTAG controllers from interfacing to it. The Low Voltage Adapter overcomes this limitation by providing the appropriate level translation and current drive capability. Circuit boards having an Intel XDP connector can utilize the Low Voltage Adapter to access the scan chain with existing scan controllers.

“The Low Voltage Adapter fills a gap for new processor technologies that require a low voltage interface combined with low impedance termination. The adapter is capable of driving a 50 ohm resistor at one volt,” states David Muse, Hardware Products Manager at Corelis.

The Low Voltage Adapter is fully compatible with Corelis’ ScanExpress family of software products and comes complete with all necessary hardware and cabling. The adapter is available from stock with a list price of $1,500.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Selects Corelis

Corelis Boundary-Scan Tools Reduce Prototype Debug Time.

Jump to Success Story

Cerritos, CA, February 1, 2010 – Corelis, Inc., a leading supplier of high-performance boundary-scan test and measurement tools, announced the deployment of their ScanExpress boundary-scan toolset at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory for use in the Reconfigurable Cluster Element (RCE) initiative. The initiative is led by Mike Huffer and supported by Information Systems Specialist, Chris O’Grady.

The RCE circuit board modules are currently used to store detector data collected during proton collisions traveling near the speed of light in the two-mile linear accelerator at the University of Stanford. The technology is also being considered for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Array in Chilé, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the CERN research center of the Swiss/French border, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) in Chilé which will study Dark Matter and Dark Energy.

Prior to boundary-scan testing, O’Grady was limited to probing circuit board test points with an oscilloscope resulting in an average debug time of two days for each problematic board. Now with boundary-scan testing, the debug time has been reduced to about one minute, or roughly the time it takes to set up a board and run the boundary-scan test.

O’Grady explained, “Two days of troubleshooting per board is excessive, especially when highly skilled personnel need to be involved. When five boards are bad, two weeks of my time is tied up causing major delays on other projects. It simply got to a point where we needed to either reduce the debug time or assign the task to someone else.”

“The Corelis tools have allowed me to recover lost time. When five boards have problems, not only do Corelis tools save me two weeks worth of work, but I can deliver five boards that much faster!”
