Corelis Introduces Semiconductor Validation Tool to Help Identify Counterfeit Components

JTAG Interrogator Improves Validation of Semiconductor Authenticity.

Cerritos, CA, June 24, 2014 – Corelis, Inc., the leading supplier of high-performance boundary-scan test and measurement tools, announced today the introduction of the JTAG Interrogator, a simple software tool designed to assist in the validation of authentic semiconductors. Targeted at receiving inspection and quality assurance departments, the JTAG Interrogator utilizes IEEE-1149.1 standard on-chip electronic identification techniques to aid in the detection and reporting of counterfeit semiconductors.

As semiconductor components have become commonplace in daily life, so has the potential for counterfeit semiconductors to make their way into critical systems, posing significant risks to health, safety, and security of people worldwide. Semiconductor counterfeiting can be as simple as re-marking a genuine component to indicate it is new or offers better performance, or as complex as manufacturing exact clones that offer the same form, fit, and function as a genuine device—while discretely hiding additional malicious circuitry to gather data or disable a system without warning. The increased sophistication in counterfeit remarking techniques has reduced the effectiveness of visual inspection, making it critically important to include electronic verification in the detection process.

Ryan Jones, Senior Technical Marketing Engineer at Corelis claims, “The general semiconductor industry is in agreement that the best way to combat counterfeit components is to purchase from OCMs or their authorized distributors. While we stand by this recommendation, circumstances often require procurement from other component sources, opening the supply chain up to the risks of inauthentic parts. The JTAG Interrogator application makes it easy to electronically read and verify identifying information from compatible JTAG components, including the new Electronic Chip ID (ECID) standardized under IEEE-1149.1-2013.”

The JTAG Interrogator software includes a USB 2.0 JTAG hardware adapter to get started with semiconductor validation. List price for the JTAG Interrogator package is $550. To learn more about Corelis products, visit their website at www.corelis.com.

Jump to processor support page: TI AM18x AM DM37x

Cerritos, CA, December 6, 2011 – Corelis, Inc., the leading supplier of high-performance JTAG test and measurement tools, announced today ScanExpress JET™ support for Texas Instruments Sitara™ ARM® Cortex™-A8 and ARM9™ microprocessors, specifically the AM37x, DM37x, and AM18x families. ScanExpress JTAG Embedded Test (JET) is a cutting edge test methodology providing at-speed testing of embedded processor-based electronic printed circuit boards and systems to detect, isolate, and diagnose structural and functional defects while minimizing test development time and resource investment.

ScanExpress JET utilizes a processor’s JTAG debug port to download and command execution of microprocessor coded test steps which enable at-speed functional testing of the processor and all major peripheral interfaces. ScanExpress JET also provides an integrated development environment allowing users to create or import their own scripted test cases through a simplified graphical user interface. Benefits of using ScanExpress JET for TI Sitara ARM microprocessors include:

  • Standardized interface tests for SDRAM memory, I2C, Ethernet, PMIC, and UART
  • Fast in-system programming and testing of parallel and serial NOR and NAND Flash
  • Automatic test development for supported peripherals
  • Integrated scripting environment for test customization

"The IEEE-1149.1 JTAG standard has quietly evolved to close the test coverage gaps created by technology miniaturization and high-speed interfaces," states Ryan Jones, Senior Technical Marketing Engineer at Corelis. "Processor driven test solutions, such as ScanExpress JET, are able to remove the necessity of having a large number of JTAG devices on a board to justify JTAG testing—a single MPU is often adequate. Applications for Texas Instruments Sitara ARM microprocessors represent the typical high performance, low accessibility case where they are the only JTAG device in a design making them great candidates to apply this technology."

Sitara microprocessors are utilized in applications such as retail point-of-sale terminals, industrial automation, human machine interfaces, single-board computing, network storage, and network printing. ScanExpress JET for TI Sitara ARM microprocessors is designed to provide engineers with a ready-to-use solution that helps speed up their design, development, and test processes.
